Motherhood
by Dana Djokic © 2006
That was me
Foregoing food for some control
That was me then
Tallying up the day's toll
On my body, on my mind
No one knew to be so kind
On my heart, on my soul
Carrying on inside a big black hole
That was me then
Crying in darkness, crouching in light
That was me way back then
Holding my babies in lieu of a fight
That was me back then
Bending and twisting to get everything done
Starving and fevering
Alongside a thriving daughter and son
That was then
That was me that nobody knew
It's the end of the labor era
With childbirth I 'm through.
