fall
© David McLean
memories fell from us like centuries fall
from the trees that stand humble here
tearing instants from the rock,
they are miners plucking life
from nothing with nimble fingers
assembling time's terror
in tiny piles under them.
they are dead most of the time
like women and men,
like children when the nightmares
live in them, never humble
trees again
