URBAN DECAY

ABANDONED ASYLUMS IN BLACK & WHITE

Photography and words by Jason Baker

A Book Review by Chris Bartholomew

When this book arrived in the mail I thought it had to be the smallest book in page numbers that I had ever seen. They do say that great things come in small packages, and this is one of those.

The book itself is beautiful. It's square, small, and dark. Every page is glossy. The photographs are very well done, some of the best of abandoned buildings I have ever seen and the poetry that is in the book is full of darkness and light, just like the black and white pictures.

While there are not a lot of words in this book, the words say a lot, and give you a sense of the people that once may have lived in these structures. You feel a sense of lost hope, loneliness, but also get a look into the people that may have lived in these now abandoned buildings.

Photography buffs will love this book. The selected photographs have a lot to convey. If a picture tells a thousand words then this is a huge book indeed. It is very well worth the money and it really is a darkly beautiful presentation of the abandoned asylums it represents. Well done Jason Baker. I look forward to seeing another photograph book from you in the future.
