Then Again, Maybe I Shouldn't

by Dana Djokic © 2006

I think about mountain climbing

Or hiking a long, difficult trail

I consider bungee jumping off a bridge

Or maybe taking on a windy sail

I ponder running a marathon

Or jumping hurdles on the track

But wishing, thinking and yearning

Will never take me back

Cartwheels, handstands, backbends

What a young body could do

Skateboarding, biking, rough-housing

And never a pain, ache or the flu

Elastic muscles and bendable bones

Beneath supple and soft skin

There was no deception in the brain

As to whether my body would win

Some days I can jog a couple miles

And feel like there's wind under my feet

Other days I can't get off the couch

Unless it's to go get a chocolate treat

Now I talk about running the marathon

But the Lord knows I couldn't

Maybe I'll just walk a mile to the store

Then again, maybe I shouldn't.

Dana Djokic been writing poetry since the age of 16.  Moving from Chicago to a farm in Indiana and growing up there with all that time and expanse of space at the farm was probably the right environment for poetry to come out, along with, of course, life in general. Dana has two children, Mike who is 17 and Diana who is 16 and a Beagle named Benny.  Dana Djokic is an attorney who would rather write, draw, dance and sing and take naps.
