Beyond Belief
by Oonah V Joslin © 2007
In the beginning was Santa Claus.
They promised me his whiskered smile,
his omnipresent magic sleigh,
elves working busily
to bring free gifts on Christmas Day.
Then there was eternity;
forever and forever and
it's where you go to when you die.
I'd think about this inwardly
trying to find it's end.
And there was God Who came to Earth.
What an extraordinary birth;
Whose was the Word, the miracle,
Who when He died came back to life
and he could save us all.
Arthur and Merlin, Osiris, Zeus;
magic and myth - elusive truths
shine beyond reason; their display
leaving my sight in disarray.
Kaleidoscopes of youth.
Now grown in logic beyond hope I
know there is no Utopia;
that through my dying mists I'll see
only the end - the end of me
and all the dreams I once held high.
Yet I'd pray one final prayer
if anyone is listening.
Oh God, Who made the universe, her
child still needs your comforting.
If You can make Yourself be there…Be there.
