THE CLOWNS

Luis Cuauhtemoc Berriozabal © 2008

She paints her face
like a clown.
She was always
fearful of
clowns.  So now she
joins them, makes
up her face like
the clowns she saw
on TV,
while her mother
and father
fought and screamed in
the next room.
She would turn up
the volume
when it was too
much for her.
The laughing clown's
voice got in
her ears and would
never stop.
She still hears them,
the screaming
and fighting, even
if they're divorced
and far away.
